- Throughout the course of the child's treatment, there will be a need for many kinds of support therapies.
- • Transfusions of blood products, platelets and white cells may be needed.
- • Infections are common in children and may require specific antibiotics. Exposure to contagious disease is likely
- to occur, so the child may require specific gamma globulin .
- • Supportive measures can include nutritional support such as artificial feedings through a vein
- (hyperalimentation). Access to a vein may be a problem so central venous catheters are often used, such as the
- Broviac or Hickman catheters or the Port-a-Cath .
- • Drugs, other agents and psychological support techniques may be necessary to help children with anticipatory
- nausea, or nausea and vomiting after radiation or chemotherapy treatments.
